Keeping our balance and Yoga
Balance keeps us alive!
From the tiniest cells in our bodies, to our organs, our tissues, and entire systems, nature works to keep everything in balance. Homeostasis is the tendency towards this equilibrium and those moments when we feel balanced, like a dragonfly on a highwire, are delicious, incredible, bright, magnificent.
But what about the times when we’re not feeling balanced? When we are a little off.. either mentally and emotionally, physically, or a little bit of both. This is a time of recalibration. A time to step back, listen and observe. And do what our bodies are asking us to do. Rest, digest and recalibrate.
“Yoga is said to be an evenness of mind.”
This line from the Baghavad Gita (2.48) encourages us to keep a balanced mind. And says that this can be done by engaging ourselves in action with our mind established, in a balanced and even state. Not acting out of wanting something, but to develop the ability to disconnect, to get back into balance. We don’t have to do anything. The mind is always planning, creating a list of ‘to do’s’! But if we can learn to stop, listen and observe the waves of recalibration, we can let nature do her job. Given the space, everything always tends back towards equilibrium in its own time and along its own path.
Yin and yang
I’ve been reading a book this week that speaks of the dualities and patterns of life. I liked these lines that said “all patterns in life are formed by contrasts. Dark and light, cold and hot, passive and active, inside and outside, water and fire, night and day. And since existence is never static, what is yin and what is yang are always in flux, always changing” (Bernie Clark, Yin Yoga).
Begin with your seat
So what can we do? We can find steadiness and comfort in our seat, our base. Patanjali speaks of the ‘seat.’ He says that when we are steady and stable in the physical body and in our intelligence (‘sthira’) and when we are in a place of comfort and ease with a peaceful soul (‘sukham’) we are ready to learn, to grow, to develop and to progress onto the next. So sit back, listen and act when the time is right.
