Whether you’re a zodiac believer or an astrology sceptic, we challenge you to try out these asanas and see if they strike a chord!
It’s the end of March, finally! Days are starting to get longer, clocks jump forward next week and we finally have sunnier times on the horizon.
This marker of spring also brings with it the Astrological New Year. Unlike the Gregorian calendar year, which starts on the 1st January, the beginning of the astrological calendar occurs at the Spring Equinox, this year on the 20th March.
To celebrate these new beginnings with a bit of Frog Project yoga fun, let’s take a look at what your star sign says about you, and how you can apply the zodiac to your yoga practice. Full disclosure, I’m a bit of a sceptic when it comes to the zodiac. I enjoy reading my horoscope with a healthy dose of disbelief. As a forthright, prickly, controversial Scorpio, I would say that though, wouldn’t I?
Waving hello to spring
Despite my scepticism, it makes perfect sense to me to celebrate the new year in spring. It’s a time when we start seeing green shoots and buds on the trees. We open the windows and let the fresh air in. We turn our central heating off and give our houses a good clean, getting rid of all traces of winter.
There’s something wonderful about celebrating a new year in spring, rather than at the start of January when the year’s most miserable months lie ahead. So in the spirit of new beginnings, let’s suspend our disbelief and dive into our zodiac yoga personalities.
What does your star sign say about you?
The innate qualities gifted to you from your birth sign can make certain yoga poses more challenging and energizing, while other postures are more restful and relaxing. We’ve got the perfect yoga poses for you, based on your star sign.
And if you’re a great believer in the zodiac, please let us know what you think! Did we get you spot on?
Aries – Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III)
This fire sign is courageous, ambitious and competitive. You’ll find it difficult to slow down in life, preferring to keep moving forward. Try Warrior poses to harness all that Aries energy and bring the fight! Warrior III will keep dynamic Arians challenged and feeling strong, while also encouraging them to embrace a moment of stillness.
Taurus – Tree Pose (Ekpadasana)
What better for stubborn, dependable Taurus than a pose that plays to their steady natures? Tree Pose will keep these Earth signs rooted firmly to the ground and use their abundant determination to maintain stability in the posture. If you’re a Taurus you’ll like a challenge, so try lifting your arms above the head and maintaining that calm, steady Tree as you sway in the wind!
Gemini – One-legged Chair Pose (Eka Pada Utkatasana)
Versatile and curious Geminis are easily distracted, often dashing from idea to the next. Your energy and passion is contagious, but maintaining focus is a challenge as your inquisitive natures lead you down rabbit holes towards your next project. A figure-four chair is a challenging pose that will keep you present and focused on one thing at a time!
Cancer – Child’s Pose (Balasana)
Beneath that protective shell is a sentimental, caring personality that needs nurturing. Cancerians are intuitive, with an active imagination that sometimes needs a bit of grounding. Child’s pose will nurture those strong emotions, giving you a moment of calm to relieve any stress or anxiety that you may be prone to.
Leo – Cobra (Bhujangasana)
Dramatic, outgoing, resilient: Leos are natural leaders and need a strong posture to channel this fiery energy. This heart-opening Cobra Pose allows Leos to share their boundless capacity for love and affection, leading with the heart, and is also a great posture to practice that all-important Lion’s Breath!
Virgo – Goddess Pose (Utkata)
Virgo is commonly seen as the nurturer, mother earth, or a figure of fertility and harvest. Goddess Pose perfectly represents the Virgo’s natural love of beauty and perfection. A practical, loyal and gentle sign, Virgos will feel empowered in this pose that encourages a downward energy, keeping you rooted to the earth.
Libra – Dancer’s Pose (Natarajasana)
Ever the diplomat, Libra is represented by a set of scales. Loving harmony, fairness and a sense of justice, Libras should feel at home when working on their own natural balance. Many balancing postures will feel good to you – try Dancer’s Pose to open your heart and mind, feeling calm, powerful and in control.
Scorpio – Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
Scorpios are often seen as the most passionate, forthright and independent of the signs. Sometimes seeming prickly or closed off to new acquaintances, Scorpios benefit from poses that help them open up. Camel Pose is a challenge that stubborn and brave Scorpios will welcome, and as a strong heart-opening pose it is aligned to their honest and authentic natures.
Sagittarius – Yoga Squat (Malasana)
Extroverted and independent Sagittarius has a strong sense-of-self. Your time spent alone is a way for you to reboot and recharge the batteries. Sinking into a Malasana squat will keep that strong, independent spirit, welcoming a mindful practice that grounds you in the present moment.
Capricorn – Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Climb to the top of the mountain like the goat that you are! As a serious and tenacious Earth sign, you’ll welcome grounding poses that encourage discipline. Capricorns are often concerned with what things look like and how they are perceived, so keeping it simple with mountain pose keeps the pressure off.
Aquarius – Wild Thing (Camatkarasana)
For imaginative and individual Aquarius, Wild Thing is the perfect pose to bring out your inspirational energy! As the Water-Bearer, you often carry a lot of weight on your back from your quest for social justice. Wild Thing is a deep backbend that helps your cares to fall away and lets your individuality shine!
Pisces – Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
As The Fish, Pisces are playful, affectionate and at their best when they are in nature. This heart and throat opener lets an intuitive Pisces let their emotions loose, while creating a base of stability and calm.
