Unleashing the Yoga Within: Yoga after UPW

What is UPW?

Last week I embarked on an intense, yet other-worldly invigorating 4 day Live Online Conference with 12,000 other people from 158 countries around the World! Oh yes, the mighty UPW. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about (I hadn't heard of it until a few weeks ago either!), Tony Robbins (life coach, motivational speaker, author) has taken his Unleash The Power Within four day seminar online! Zoom with 12,000 other people is an extremely empowering experience!

So, after 14 hours a day for 4 consecutive days, leaping around my room, singing at the top of my lungs, crying like a baby and some good old deep belly laughing, I've come away with many great aspirations, goals, ideas, you name it! Insight, introspection and a few more tools to take with me into my future.

The Power of Our Physiology

But the number one takeaway, I'd really love to share with you all. It seems simple, and many of us have been doing it unconsciously our whole lives, but the power of shifting our physiology truly does have the power to shift our experience of our moods, our lives, and our worlds.

So, what do I mean by our physiology? I mean shifting our negative thoughts, emotions, feelings by simply moving our bodies. Changing our physiology means changing our mental state and breaking negative patterns. Great physiology therefore, leads to great emotions, and that is one of the keys to getting unstuck. Try it, right now, get up and jump, dance, laugh like crazy. Celebrate like a toddler, take some big breaths and make a shift!

How do we make the shift?

I don't know about you, but for a pretty happy-go-lucky, positive kind of a gal, I have found the last few months INCREDIBLY TOUGH. On all levels! In fact, I don't know anybody who's sailed through the pandemic without getting splashed, had a wave crash over, or fallen overboard! I think most days I've experienced at least two out of three of those metaphors, if not all three!

So, how does it work? What's the secret? It all comes down to our energy. And how the amount of energy we have in any given moment, shapes the way we see our world (and the people, relationships, situations we're faced with,) and experience all that life throws our way.

The key, get up and get MOVING!

Yoga through the lens of Physiology

One of the most interesting aspects of the seminar was studying health, wellness and the mind through a Western lens. All of my studies (and many of my years) have been spent in the East, and with that, learning and experiencing life through an Eastern lens.

But as I practice yoga this week, with you all in my classes, I'm wondering what I can bring from UPW to our Online Community. And quite simply, it's to get up and move. Move our bodies however it feels good to move, connect to ourselves through our bodies, and notice how this can sharpen our minds and awareness and ultimately experience of the world around us.

How many of us during a yoga practice have brain waves? Ideas and inspiration just pop up when you're in the middle of a posture, a sequence or during mediation or relaxation. "Ah, I should to this!" "Oh yes, that's the answer!" When we slow down, drop our shoulders, breathe and connect, we become sharper, more focused, and our tensions and ego's take a back seat. At least for the duration of the yoga practice!

What does this mean for me?

OK, so many who read this who already practice yoga will be thinking, "sure, I know this." But taking some time to contemplate (even just the few minutes it's taken to read this article) helps us integrate into our day to day lives. And employ it when we need it most. We wouldn't get stressed meditating on a mountain, and are unlikely to start a fight when transitioning out of child's pose!

If you don't practice yoga yet, maybe consider this as a gentle route to feeling OUTSTANDING!

Anything else?

The Online Experience

So maybe I'm tooting my own trumpet, and of course I'd LOVE you all the join our Live Online Yoga classes, but may I take a moment to reiterate just how incredible it feels to be participating in something, anything, in REAL TIME, with REAL PEOPLE all around the country and all around the world.

As we transition into Winter, into greater Pandemic related restrictions, we may be feeling like our World's are closing in. And maybe on paper, they are. But what if we could really connect to ourselves on the inside, learn to move how it feels amazing to move, breathe how it feels amazing to breathe, and find peace and community practising together?

Try it, I'd love to have you here 🙂
